DIY Shea & Vanilla Sugar Scrub

This Shea & Vanilla Sugar Scrub is a delicious-smelling scrub with added moisturizing benefits. As you probably know, sugar is great for exfoliation. It gently removes dead skin cells, leaving skin soft and smooth. The addition of Shea butter makes this scrub extra nourishing as it is extremely emollient and healing to the skin. Coconut oil is also very nourishing. It soaks into the skin rather quickly, making it a good addition to this moisturizing scrub. Shea & Vanilla Sugar Scrub Ingredients: 2 ounces Shea butter (where I buy Shea butter) 1 ounce coconut oil (where I buy coconut oil) 1/2...

DIY Calendula-Lavender Cleansing Grains

I first learned about cleansing grains in Rosemary Gladstar’s book, Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health, and have been amazed at how well they clean and exfoliate the skin. The wonderful thing about cleansing grains is they are extremely gentle. Much different to regular facial scrubs, cleansing grains can be used on a daily basis (and in place of a facial cleanser). In fact, these are usually recommended as a facial cleanser. They also double as a face mask. Just leave on the face for 15 minutes before wiping off with a warm washcloth. (I wouldn’t do a face mask every day....

All About the Oil Cleansing Method

Everyone wants better skin, and the beauty industry knows it. In fact, they’ve made billions making us all feel so insecure about our blackheads and pimples that we reach for their chemical-laden products at every breakout. Yet, thousands of us still suffer from chronic skin problems, no matter how many expensive products we try. Sure, the best products might work for a few weeks, but in the long term, our skin still looks tired, grimy and as blemish-filled as before. Why is this? Shouldn’t these powerful products make a difference? What’s wrong with the message the skin care industry is...

6 Uses for Sweet Orange Essential Oil

This post contains affiliate links. Way back when I began to use essential oils, sweet orange essential oil was one of the first essential oils I purchased. I think it was because it was inexpensive and also because I recognized it. Orange was familiar; so I figured it wouldn’t be too hard to use. Fast forward 14 years and I’m still using it! Sweet orange (Latin name: Citrus sinensis) is bright and citrusy. It smells just like a juicy orange, which is warm and uplifting. Besides being helpful in natural cleaning products, sweet orange essential oil has many aromatic benefits. Below...

Need Help Eating More Veggies?

There are a lot of people out there touting that a certain way of eating is the “best” way to eat. But we all know that what works well for one person may not work well for another. That’s why I think it’s important to figure out what works for your body’s needs and not worry about what the “experts” are saying. That said, if there is one thing that everyone can agree on, no matter what dietary style you follow, it’s that eating more fruits and veggies is a good thing. Even your typical Western medical doctor can’t disagree...

POLYN: Plant-based Skin Care with Aromatic Benefits

Because our skin absorbs what we put on it, it’s important that the skin care we use is free of known toxins and other harmful ingredients. Sadly, the products on our store shelves are not fully vetted for human safety and contain many nasties we’d be better off without. The main issue with toxic ingredients is the way they build up in the body. Over time our toxic load continues to grow. Making our bodies work harder to do even the most basic tasks. Thankfully, companies are producing safer products that help moisturize, cleanse, and nourish the skin while avoiding unnecessary toxins and fillers....

Spirulina & Berry Smoothie Recipe

I’ve recently been experimenting with adding more smoothies to my diet as a way of enhancing my nutrition. The main goal is to add more fruits and vegetables but I’ve found it’s also a convenient way to add a number of superfoods to my daily regimen. One such superfood is Spirulina. If you’ve never tried Spirulina, you might be wondering what it is. Well, the short explanation is that Spirulina is a blue-green algae. Yes, you read that right. It’s algae. Spirulina is packed full of nutrients and trace minerals, so much so that some say it’s the most nutrient-dense food on the planet....
