Eating with Control – 10 Tips

Food – it’s everywhere! We use it to celebrate, mourn, and appease boredom.   

Some of us are mindless eaters, not realizing how much actually consume.  Others choose to overindulge because it feels good (at the time).  Most of us are probably a combination of the two.  Sadly, a lot of us eat to fill a void (one that can only be truly satisfied with God).

Of course, there are the rare few that have no problem with food whatsoever – more power to them!

Obesity is a huge problem in the modern world.  It is true that much of the population is eating processed food on a daily basis, but a huge part of this epidemic lies with the amount we are consuming.  Cutting back your portions will make a big difference to your weight and energy levels.  If you don’t believe me, try it.

Overeating causes us to feel sluggish. Just think about how you feel after visiting an all-you-can-eat buffet!  You need a nap.

Overeating can seriously undermine your efforts in striving for a home filled with peace and joy.  Unwanted pounds can contribute to fatigue and depression as well as rob you of confidence.

Moms who feel good often help their families feel good.  Getting in control of eating will benefit you as you work toward achieving a happy, healthy home.

Here are 10 tips that work for me:

  • Wait for your stomach to growl before starting a meal.
  • Eat slowly. Taste your food!  Give your stomach time to digest and your brain time to register that you are full.
  • Stop when satisfied (or “politely full”, not stuffed)
  • Ask God to help you do the above.
  • If you are full, clear your plate from the table so you won’t pick at what is left.
  • Eat when sitting at the table, instead of when you are consumed in another activity (like watching T.V)
  • Create a space in the fridge for your leftovers; perhaps a container with your name on it.  That way you can put your food aside and know it will be there later if you want it (chances are you won’t, but it helps you stop).
  • Use a smaller plate.
  • Get a friend on board.  It is nice to have someone to check-in with and someone who can understand your struggles.
  • Cast your cares upon God instead of reaching for food.  Read His word and find comfort in Him – Remember, In His presence there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11)

I am well aware that taking control of your eating habits is easier said than done.  Just keep on trying.  It gets easier with time and practice!

    Thank you for these tips. I would like to add one that I find helpful. If I am going to eat a meal or a snack, I drink a full glass of water first. It helps me feel full and slows me down a bit. This is really helpful if you find yourself at a buffet-style restaurant or celebration of some kind.
